Cultural Resources Committee
Stewardship of the heritage, sacred places, and traditional knowledge of the California Valley Miwok Tribe.
Mission
The Cultural Resources Committee is responsible for the identification, protection, and stewardship of the tribe's cultural heritage — the sites, objects, knowledge, and practices that connect the California Valley Miwok Tribe to its ancestors and to its homeland. The committee acts as the tribe's voice in formal consultations with federal, state, and local agencies whose decisions affect the tribe's ancestral territory.
Key Responsibilities
- Site identification & protection. Maintain records of culturally significant places within the tribe's ancestral territory and respond to threats to those places.
- NAGPRA consultation. Represent the tribe in matters arising under the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act, including consultation on inventories, repatriation, and disposition of ancestral remains and cultural items.
- Section 106 consultation. Serve as the tribe's point of contact for federal agencies fulfilling obligations under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act on projects that may affect historic properties of religious or cultural significance.
- Traditional knowledge stewardship. Coordinate the documentation, protection, and intergenerational transmission of language, oral tradition, and cultural practice — always under the direction of citizens and culture-bearers.
- Cultural monitoring. Provide cultural monitors and technical guidance on ground-disturbing work within ancestral territory when so requested or required.
